The bodies of Polaris contributor Alexander Klimchuk and Giga Chikhladze, a reporter working
for Russian Newsweek, were returned to their families in Tbilisi on August 17, thanks to the efforts
of Associated Press photographers Musa Sadulayev and Sergei Grits who escorted them from a morgue
in Tskhinvali, the South Ossetian capital, to Gori in Georgia.

Our thanks go to Santiago Lyon of the AP and his staff for their participation in this effort and
of course to the two photographers in the field who braved many dangers to see that their comrades
get a decent burial after more than a week since their death.

The Ambassadors are chosen from a wide range of photographic disciplines – news, sport, nature,
universally recognized for their high standards and are highly respected by fellow professionals.

Coming from a country that experiences conflict and volatility on a daily basis would heighten anyone’s
perspective on life. Ziv Koren grew up in Israel in the 1970s and ‘80s but his later desire to document
the conflict in his homeland through the medium of photography wasn’t always there. So, what led him
into the dangerous and life-threatening world of being a photojournalist in one of the world’s most troubled regions?

65th annual POYi Awards.

Liss garnered the top prize for his piece titled "Voices from Juvenile Detention: Kids Behind Bars,"
which chronicles the lives of juvenile offenders in pre-trial detention.

Fadek was honored with a Judges' Special Recognition award for his piece, "City of Missing Women,"

Voices from Juvenile Detention: Kids Behind Bars

It sounds harmless: "pre-trial detention." But the reality is far different. In a squat block buildings
in Laredo, Texas and in Portland, Oregon - and in similar places around the nation - children await
trial or placement in concrete cells while the underlying issues that led to their behavior fester.
Some are addicts who need treatment; others are kids battling mental illnesses. Many are angry
and have been virtually abandoned by absentee or irresponsible parents.

There is a saying in the area that, if you want to find Juarez, located just across the border from
El Paso, Texas, just follow the crosses. And there are a lot of them. 421 women, to be exact,
have been murdered in Juarez since 1993, and hundreds more women have disappeared.
Most of them fit a similar profile -- young women who came from other parts of the country to
work in the maquiladoras, the factories on the border that take advantage of Mexico's cheap labor
to produce goods for U.S. and international companies. Many of the women disappeared on their
way to or from work, perhaps while waiting for the buses that take them between the maquiladoras
and the shantytowns on the outskirts of town in the late-night or predawn hours.

Insight Editions has released a new book of photographs chronicling John Lennon and Yoko Ono by Allan Tannenbaum.

"In November 1980, on the eve of John Lennon’s untimely death, photographer Allan Tannenbaum had unique and total access to John and Yoko, who were emerging from five years of seclusion and avoiding the media. As one of the few photographers with whom John and Yoko were close, Tannenbaum was privileged to be able to capture many intimate moments between the two. John cherished these images of Yoko and was moved by their beauty and grace. The result is this moving book of photography about John and Yoko together, in the last weeks of his life."

Yannis Kontos, a winner of 19 international photojournalism awards will exhibit work from two extensive projects at the Frissiras Museum in Athens, Greece through May 13, 2007.

Kontos' Athens show is divided into two parts: "North Korea: Red Utopia" and "Possible/Impossible: Aporias"

In "North Korea: Red Utopia," Kontos takes viewers on a tour of North Korea, perhaps one of the most restrictive environments for a photographer. Kontos had previously tried and failed for three years to get into the country and eventually gained access after using false papers and posing as a tourist. As a result, the majority of the images in this exhibit were taken surreptitiously, as government minders were ever-present.

"Possible/Impossible: Aporias" takes viewers on a journey through Kontos' work from 1997 to the present day. The title comes from the ancient Greek, ‘no passage’, and means ‘the insurmountable’.
