Scandal at the Vatican points to leak from newspaper director

Dino Boffo, former director of the Italian Catholic newspaper Accenire, was fined several years ago for making harassing phone calls to a man's wife. The Italian newspaper, Il Giornale, owned by Premier Silvio Berlusconi's brother, ran an article in August 2009 claiming that the phone calls stemmed from Boffo's romantic pursuit of the husband. Boffo resigned in September amid the accusations. The Italian media has tied the defamatory information published by Il Giornale to a document allegedly leaked by Giovanni Maria Vian, director of the papal mouthpiece, L'Osservatore Romano. At the request of Benedict XVI, the Vatican released a statement on February 9, 2010 denying any accusations that it played a role in the events and the leaks leading to Boffo's resignation.
